Add more fun to your Virginia vacation and reduce the cost. "Virginia Vacation Quest" - a new travel-planning computer tool makes it so easy

Does that sound like an outrageous over-promise?  Then you and your family haven't worked together to create your own "Virginia Vacation Quest," a computer learning and planning tool that helps everyone in your family or in your travel group research a different aspect of your coming trip to this beautiful state.

It works like this. Each person is given a specific area to research on the computer - Virginia attractions, accommodations (including locations and costs), restaurants (cuisine, cost, locations),   transportation alternatives (air, car, bus - including estimated cost of each), the history and geography of the area, and brief bios of famous people who have lived there.

All of these reports are "cut and pasted" into one computer document that the family or traveling group reviews and the group makes a final decision of what they want to see and where they want to stay and dine. The "group accountant" does a summary spread sheet of cost alternatives to help make the best and most economical selections.

This whole concept is based on an exciting new program, WebQuest, created by Bernie Dodge of San Diego State University. It was developed primarily to help students work collaboratively to research  different aspects of a topic.

Why not put your family to work with a specific research assignment for your Virginia vacation? Side benefits: each participant learns more about history, mathematics, pricing a vacation, and making educated choices of what to see and do. And everyone becomes more excited about the trip because they each had a part in planning it!

Much of the framework for this Virginia Vacation Quest has already been done for you with worksheets you will find in a program created for Illinois students, "VacationQuest" by Dennis Mann.
