Even best-selling authors are joining the self-publish boom. Watch how Hermoine Hilton promotes her Executive Memory Guide (Simon & Schuster) on TV with Dave Letterman and Bryant Gumbel.

Now after a year of gathering questions from seminars at colleges and major corporations across America, she has the 100 most common memory problems - with 100 solutions in her new book that she chose to self-publish with us.

Self-help books (computers, software, gardening, medical) sell well when authors speak at local clubs and churches, often giving a share of the book profits to a charity. This book attacks the fear most of us have of aging into Alzheimer's or a form of dementia. You learn that so many things we forget (lost keys, glasses, friends' names) are a normal part of life and some simple techniques can help you remember much more than you think.   THE RAW TRUTH ABOUT SELF-PUBLISHING YOUR BOOK

The New York Times recently reported that the U.S. book market is in serious decline with most of the major publishing companies and bookstore chains are laying off staff and cutting costs. However, "one segment of the business that is actually flourishing" is self publishing. But the Times adds this cautionary note: "Self publishers flourish as writers pay the tab."

For a number of years, our companies - Gieseking & Clive, Inc. and now the Business Scribe, Inc. - has made a comfortable living working with major publishers and corporations.. Our "Frommer Bed & Breakfast North America" published by Simon & Schuster went through four editions over eight years. Our "For Members Only" Cardmember newsletter that we wrote and published  for American Express had an average monthly circulation of 12-14 million.

But several years ago we embarked on the perilous seas of self publishing and made every mistake in the book (literally). We first printed 2,000 of a pet care book, sold 300 copies, faced printer "warehouse" costs, and ultimately gave the remaining copies to the Doris Day pet foundation - got a nice letter from Doris. Self publishing printers offered "print on demand" services (paying only for books actually ordered) but then charged many extras for editing, ISBN numbers, listings on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble - and many other services that produced little or no results. One major book chain agreed to carry our books, but we would not be paid for 90 days (60 days after we had paid for the printed books) and agree to accept a return of all unsold books - the royal road to bankruptcy.

After numerous mistakes, we have finally found a formula that works - keeping costs at rock bottom, using free texts from the public domain, using free publicity extensively and - finally - learning how to publish our books on the web with their own websites - without spending a penny.

We also learned how to pre-sell books to Williamsburg companies getting contracts and checks before the books were even written or published. Examples: We added a Sunterra logo to the front cover of our Williamsburg One Day Trip Book and this timeshare company ordered 5,000 copies as gifts for vacation shoppers. The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg gave us an order to write and print a book for their 50th Anniversary celebration. After researching and publishing the book, we were so impressed by their charitable activities that we joined the club. We have faced all of the "sharks" of self publishing to begin a satisfying business. We will share what we have learned with writers willing to listen to the good and the bad of self publishing at our workshop.
